When to plant cantaloupe in Georgia

Start with the North or South Georgia row, not a statewide average. UGA lists April 15 to June 15 for North Georgia spring cantaloupe. South Georgia has March 1 to April 30 in spring and August 1 to September 15 for a fall crop. The North Georgia fall row is not recommended.

Your region

The regional split changes more than the first spring date: it changes whether a fall crop belongs in the plan at all. If your garden sits between the broad North and South labels, use your county Extension guidance to select the better regional row instead of averaging the two schedules.

Seed or transplant?

Use the packet to choose a starting method, then prepare a smooth, debris-free planting surface for direct seed. UGA’s melon guide describes several establishment schemes; it does not make one method mandatory for every home garden. Keep young plants out of cold conditions, which can slow or stunt growth.

Plan the vine space

UGA’s cantaloupe guide gives a broad field spacing range of 4 to 6 feet between rows and 2 to 3 feet within the row. Equipment, irrigation and mulch systems affect the layout, so scale the source’s range to your garden plan instead of treating one commercial spacing as a universal home-garden rule.

Is a fall crop realistic?

For South Georgia, begin with UGA’s August-to-September window and compare the packet’s maturity information with the local first-frost outlook. For North Georgia, do not convert the “not recommended” table entry into an unproven deadline. Choose a different crop or ask a county Extension office about a specific protected system.
